BBG: Hi Bobby. Before we get started, can you give us a little background information about yourself: how old you are, where you grew up; where you went to school, what you do professionally…A mini bio if you will.
Bobby: First of all I am 18 years old, turning 19 this April; I grew up in the town of Binghamton in upstate New York. I recently graduated high school, class of 2011, and I am currently going to college to become a CPT or certified personal trainer, which is what I am going to be doing professionally.
BBG: One of the reasons we’re interviewing you is because we know you’re an avid Big Back Grips user. First, how did you even come across Big Back Grips?
Bobby: First time I ever heard about Big Back Grips was on online I never knew a place to get them and I heard good reviews on them. Then on day my buddy Kevin let me use his pair during a back workout and from then on I have been hooked.
BBG: What did you use before BBGs and why did you settle on BBGs? How do they help your workout?
Bobby: I didn’t use anything before BGGs. I did try straps but I felt that those were cheating my workouts and my muscles. That’s why I prefer the BGGs over everything else because it helps your grip, focuses in on your muscle, and that’s why I prefer the grips and settled on them.
BBG: What brought you into the world of lifting and when? What are your main goals in working out?
Bobby: Friends of mine got me started with lifting. At the time my goal was only trying to put size on nothing else but then I started getting more serious half way through my senior year in high school and then I started to body-build. Since I took that step into bodybuilding, I never looked back.
BBG: Where do you train?
Bobby: At the moment I train at a local gym in my town called American Family Fitness.
BBG: Did you play or excel at any sports?
Bobby: I did when I was in middle school up until my sophomore year in high school then I started to hit the gym but not too seriously unfortunately.
BBG: What are your biggest accomplishments in your workout history so far? : Titles, personal goals achieved, etc.
Bobby: I would have to say my biggest accomplishments are hitting 205 pounds. I am probably the world’s hardest gainer, not even joking. I have always been a tall lanky kid and always weighed around 160-170 pounds on average at the height of 6’2. Then I started to diet and eat correctly and changed the medication I was on because I have a thyroid condition. Ever since then I have been setting new goals and pushing myself to personal limits.
BBG: What about outside the gym? What are your most energetic pursuits?
Bobby: Outside the gym I would say I don’t really do much except I hang out with my girlfriend. And push other people to work out. All I really do is eat sleep and think about the gym. So no matter what, my mind is always in the gym.
BBG: What is your workout schedule like?
Bobby: My workout schedule is very different from other peoples I work out Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and do a split called P.H.A.T. Which stands for power hypertrophy adaptive training but Wednesday and Sunday are usually my off day that’s just how my split is set.
BBG: What about your diet?
Bobby: What can I say — I eat 4200 calories a day; 550 grams of carbs; and 237 grams of protein. I’m not one of those guys that say if it fits your macros eat it. I am all about a healthy, somewhat clean diet. Obviously I have two cheat meals a week and I do take advantage of those.
BBG: What are your favorite exercises or body parts to work? What do you consider your best body part? Do have a body part that’s especially challenging to make headway on?
Bobby: I have a favorite exercise for every muscle group but I do love working on my back and legs just because I have noticed, genetically, they grow the fastest. I don’t think I have a “best” body part; I feel that I still have things to work on and each muscle needs to be adjusted somehow.
BBG: If someone were going to work out with you, what are they in for, what’s your workout style? What would you want from a partner?
Bobby: If someone is going to work out with me they are looking forward to an intense session if they are following my split. My workout style is go heavy/stay intense/stay focused on your goal. In a partner I would want them to be there to hype me up keeping me going when I am close to failing and going hard as nails every day.
BBG: What’s your advice to people just starting out?
Bobby: Simple: don’t start heavy and don’t throw the weight around do a moderate weight you can handle while maintaining proper form. The weight will go up if your form is correct. Don’t let your ego take over. Do proper workouts and know what you’re doing and how to do it.
BBG: Finally, can you give us your workout for just one body part: back or legs, shoulders, chest or arms, even abs. Just pick your favorites.
Bobby: The workout split I do is called P.H.A.T. It was designed by Layne Norton and I have noticed crazy results. You can find this article on simplyshredded.com or even Google it. I have noticed crazy results from switching from my basic 5-day split to this training split.
